06:39 pm - If you thought turkey soda was bad...
There are just some things that should not be turned into a candy cane.

This candy cane flavor is a good example of what not to make into a candy cane.

11:33 am - Christmas Songs
Me and Kristina often just hang out around the piano(s) in Kristinas piano nook, and sing off off sheet music. This is nothing fancy, but since my iPhone shoots video, I thought I'd upload some Christmas songs for you.

10:46 am - Changes Misconceptions Reguarding Aether Shanties
Last night during rehearsal I was spacing out on the lyrics to the new songs we are learning for the New Years eve show at The Edison. Since our fans are the most awesome in the world, and since I lost my notes as to the actual lyrics, I went on line to get your copies, and printed them. Some of what you THOUGHT I said is hysterical! For example, this verse in Wanderlust goes:

When I am feeling stagnant My lungs are filled with mud I dream of Bejing and Molikai

but the fan version said:
And I am feeling stagnant My lungs are filled with mud I dream a big dream where more are kind?
I sang this fan version once, and Jody said "Wow, in THIS version your a douche!" Anyway, I'm correcting these now and will have them online soon. I'll post them here.

06:50 pm - If only I could raise the dead
I would really like to create a pill that would allow someone to raise a zombie temporarily just so I can run a TV ad with the words, "Please see a doctor for a resurrection that lasts longer than four hours."

12:11 pm - The unwritten rules of mystery fiction
Last night, Greg was watching the movie "Drag Me To Hell" (I could only watch parts of it before needing to leave the room as horror movies make me jumpy). For those who haven't seen it (and without giving away too much), there's a scene where someone kills a kitten as a blood sacrifice.

This put me in mind of when I used to work for a now defunct mystery bookstore in San Diego during the late 80's and early 90's. A writer named Kathy Hogan Trochek published a southern semi-cozy called To Live and Die in Dixie in which the protagonist's cat is murdered and nailed to her car hood in an effort to tell her to back off.

We initially had sold a lot of it in paperback, but a couple of weeks after we first started selling it, people started returning it because of the cat's death. One woman even went so far as to say that Ms. Trochek's books were no longer welcome in her home because she had killed a cat. After that point, when people would want to buy some other book, they'd ask if we had read it and if so, did they kill cats in it?

For the next several years (after I had left the bookstore), this started to be referred to as the Unwritten Rule of Mystery Fiction. Parnell Hall even wrote a song about it.

Kathy Hogan Trochek now writes romances under the name Mary Kay Andrews and makes jokes about the incident. I can only imagine what the people who banned Trochek from their libraries would have made of "Drag Me To Hell."

10:10 am - I guess she's becoming a tank
Today I was reading Facebook and saw a status that said: "[Woman's name] is coming down with a mild case of turrets."

Sooo... I guess that means she's now got a rotating gun on the top of her head or something. Maybe she's becoming a Dalek! I just hope she doesn't come down with a mild case of trebuchets.

01:12 pm - If I write a mystery, I'm sticking to guns and knives
I just started reading a new book called Death Takes the Cake by Melinda Wells. In it, the murder victim has been drowned in a large bowl of cake batter. I haven't finished it yet to discover if that's what actually happened, but that's what it appears to be.

I'm reminded of some of the more bizarre ways people have been killed in mystery novels that stretch plausibility to the limits, though I must admit I have not seen drowning in cake batter before now.

I think the weirdest one I've ever seen was in the novel Pas de Death by L.M. Vincent. There, the murderer made a small gelatin suppository containing cyanide, and then shoved it up the victim's butt while they were having sex. I still boggle at this one and it's been nearly fifteen years since I read it.

Even Agatha Christie had her moments, such as in The Big Four where she killed a chess player by having the chess board wired so that when he played bishop to B5, he completed a circuit and was electrocuted.

I guess I still yearn for the pure detection and less so the fanciful and clever ways in which the deed is done.

10:41 pm - Wow... entitlement much?
People crack me up. On a puzzle site that I frequent, they recently went from giving away a few puzzles a week for free to a paid version with more puzzles, and the ability to access your purchased puzzles anytime (the free ones went away and didn't come back).

Today on their forums, someone said, "You know what? I'm taking my business elsewhere until this site goes back to being 100% free!"

Ooooh, I'm sure that has them quaking in their shoes.

Pee-wee Herman's big comeback

LOS ANGELES — The star may be Pee-wee, but his new live stage show is absolutely huge.
"The Pee-wee Herman Show," opening next month in downtown Los Angeles at Club Nokia theater, cost millions to mount. It boasts 11 actors, 20 puppets and marks the show's first production since 1982.
So, why now?
"Well, you know, I really want to make a movie version of 'The Playhouse,' my Saturday morning kid show," Paul Reubens said in an interview earlier this week in which he stayed in his exuberant Pee-wee persona.

"This seemed like a great way to do it: Reintroduce it, get back out there, introduce Pee-wee to the new generation that didn't know about it."
